Origin determination

A geological signature, read with care.

Trace elements, inclusions and spectral characteristics can connect a gemstone to a geological environment. Origin is expressed as an expert opinion only where the available evidence supports a scientifically responsible conclusion.

Frequently asked questions

Before you submit.

Clear answers to the practical questions clients ask most often.

Speak with the laboratory
What can ICA GemLab determine about a gemstone?+

Depending on the selected service and material, the Bangkok laboratory can identify a gemstone, assess whether it is natural or synthetic, detect identifiable treatments and provide an opinion on geographic origin where scientifically determinable.

Which service should I choose?+

Begin with the report format you require, then select any relevant origin or treatment analysis. The laboratory can review your requirements before submission if you are unsure.

Is a laboratory report a valuation?+

No. ICA GemLab reports record gemmological findings. They do not state monetary value and are not an appraisal, guarantee or certificate of ownership.

How can I verify an issued report?+

Enter the report number and PIN in the secure verification portal. Reports issued after 1 July 2025 may also be accessed using the QR code printed on the document.

When does the turnaround time begin?+

Turnaround begins on the first business day after the specimen has physically arrived at, and been accepted and registered by, the ICA GemLab main laboratory in Bangkok.

Can I send a gemstone to Dubai, Hong Kong or Taipei?+

No. These locations are client service offices and cannot accept, store or forward physical gemstones. All specimens must be sent directly to the main laboratory in Bangkok after submission instructions have been confirmed.

Can ICA GemLab examine a mounted gemstone?+

Yes, mounted gemstones can be examined in Bangkok. A setting may obstruct inclusions or restrict weighing and chemical analysis, so the report may state that the weight is estimated and the examination was limited by the mounting.

International presence

One laboratory. International access.

All physical submissions are accepted and tested exclusively in Bangkok. Dubai, Hong Kong and Taipei provide client service only and cannot receive gemstones.
